Beyond the Strai(gh)ts: Transnationalism and Queer Chinese Politics

April 29-30. 2005

Museum Theater, UC Berkeley Art Museum

2621 Durant Avenue

This conference aims to bring to a US audience ten scholars, activists, and cultural producers whose work has been critical in queer transformations in China and Taiwan, and to engage them in dialogue with important US based queer scholars and artists. Shifting the focus of comparison from the governmental role of individual states, it will ask both overseas and US participants how they perceive existing — and future — transnational processes to affect queer organizing and political discourses both within and beyond the local. We hope this forum will also enable a critical discussion of the relations between Asian American and tongzhi (Chinese lgbt) politics.

In conjunction with the conference we will be premiering new queer Chinese films and artwork by Shi Tou, Cui Zien, Hoang Tan Nguyen, and Lynne Chan.

The conference will be in English and open to the public.

job positions available

The ASUCD Gender and Sexuality Commission is in need of 2 alternates!

What is ASUCD?

ASUCD stands for the Associated Students of UC Davis, our student

government where undergraduates pay ASUCD fees for services like

Unitrans, Coffeehouse..etc etc.

What is GASC?

The Gender and Sexuality Commission is a legislative component of the

senate that gives formal recommendations on issues of gender,

sexuality, sex, LGBT issues and sexual assault. We also plan and

execute programs that concern our core values and educate the student

body thus. We've hosted the Good Vibrartions Sex Toy Workshop, helped

plan the Western Regional LGBT Conference and are hosting workshops

for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

What is an alternate?

An alternate is a volunteer like a commissioner but does not have

voting rights except when a commission is absent and unable to vote on

legislation. Alternates still can help plan and take on projects as

they see fit. So they are important still !

Can anyone apply?

Certainly! We appreciate applicants that are willing to work hard,

collaborate, compromise, plan and network. It's also ok if you don't

have experience! ASUCD commissions are the place to gain this

experience. The job is 2 hours or more a week, unpaid and you must be

able to attend meetings every Tuesday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. This

application is for Spring Quarter only( meaning the job expires in

June). Feel free to fill out a second application for the Fall 2006

term ;)

Where do I sign up??

Go to the third floor of the MU and fill out an application at the

glass cases. Or visit:

asucd.ucdavis.edu/jobs/index.cfm

You may also visit us at our meetings to see us in action!

Our next meeting is 4/19 in 5 Lower Freeborn at 4:30pm

Thank you,

--

Following is the description for the Ethnic and Cultural Affairs Commission, but you can find the members' and alternates' job descriptions for every commission (and even apply!) at asucd.ucdavis.edu/jobs . Posted on: 2005-03-01

Clinic Background - Founded in 1979, Lyon-Martin Women's Health Services, a 501(c)(3) non-profit federally qualified health center, provides client-centered medical and psychosocial services to women in the San Francisco Bay Area. At its inception, Lyon-Martin focused on providing primary health care and health education for lesbian and bisexual women. During the 1980’s, Lyon-Martin expanded its services to include service to low-income and unemployed women of all sexual orientations, who also face many barriers to accessing quality health care, and to address the emerging health issues at that time, including HIV/AIDS.

Today, Lyon-Martin strives to be the primary provider of health care in the LBT community; it is also one of only 73 “safety net” medical providers in California and the only one of its kind in San Francisco. Lyon-Martin provides 3500 critical primary care visits for over 1752 women each year. Most do not have health insurance and/or live below the federal poverty level. Many of the women who come to Lyon-Martin, come in crisis and in need of other forms of care, which also supports their physical healing. In response to those needs, Lyon-Martin provides health education, counseling, and referral services.
