Re: Winter Events in Davis:
Fri, February 24, 2006 - 4:54 PMAsian Pacific Islander Queers is a student-run organization on campus for support and community for
students who identify as both queer (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, or
questioning), and Asian or Pacific Islander (including anyone who identifies as API). In order to
promote visibility, pride, and to further educate the campus, we host an annual week of discussions and
workshops, APIQ Awareness Week.
This quarter, APIQ Awareness Week will be held from Feb 27 to March 3. We would greatly appreciate it if
you could spread the word about our event to anyone interested in learning more about our community.
Below are a list of the week's events.
APIQ 101: What we do and How we do it
Monday | Feb 27 : 7-9pm | Wellman 27
An introductory talk about the basics of being API and Queer. We will be covering vocabulary, a
breakdown of issues faced by APIQs, information on how you can be an ally, and an overview of the role
APIQ plays in the campus community.
Movie Night: Beautiful Boxer
Tuesday | Feb 28 : 7:30-9:30pm | Chem 176
APIQ hosts a Queer and Asian film, Beautiful Boxer. "Based on the true story of Thailand's famed
transvestite kickboxer, Beautiful Boxer is a poignant action drama that punches straight into the heart
and mind of a boy who fights like a man so he can become a woman." Questions and related discussion to
follow.
Open Session: Choose Your Own Adventure
Wednesday | Mar 1 : 7-9pm | Wellman 119
Though typically APIQ general meetings are closed to members only (in order to provide confidentiality
and a safe space for our members), once a quarter APIQ opens its' doors and invites the public to find
out what our meetings are like and learn more about the experience of being Queer and Asian on the UCD
campus. This quarter's open session features an interactive video presentation as well as discussion
afterwards.
APIQ Language & Culture Barriers
Thursday | Mar 2 : 7-9pm | Wellman 27
A more in depth workshop on the specific and unique dilemmas APIQs face, particularly in communicating
with older generation family members and with connecting two identities, queerness and ethnicity. This
workshop will also be examining how language affects our
realities, and new language that has recently developed to address the complexities of being Asian and
Queer.
APIQ Idol!!
Friday | Mar 3 : 9-12pm | Location to be disclosed at the workshops
APIQ's annual Karaoke night!! Join us to celebrate and finish off APIQ Awareness Week as we play games,
hang out, and of course, serenade everyone with Karaoke songs! (note: an unofficial APIQ event!)
