>We are looking for volunteers to assist in areas such as registration, courtesy, security, tech support, and other exciting positions. Please respond to Ed'd Luna at ealuna@ucdavis.edu and/or Tiffanie O'Neill at helloiamtiff@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Applications are available at the LGBTRC and the CCC. You can register online at the Conference website as well. www.comeoutwest.org
On-site registration pending availability. Registration forms are available on-line.

More information:
The Western Regional LGBTQIA College Conference will be one of the only regional educational efforts to address the health and safety of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex individuals. The conference will reach young people all over California and the western region of the United States, while bringing needed attention to such issues as hate crimes, health and family issues, and the empowerment of young people to challenge a homophobic and heterosexist world. The conference will reach out to heterosexual allies in our schools, faith organizations, and cultural communities to raise awareness and address social issues.

Keynote speakers for this year’s conference include: Monroe France, Lani Ka’ahumanu, and Emi Koyama.

Monroe France is the Coordinator of Social Justice Programs at New York University’s Office of Student Activities (OSA). He is the founder, co-owner, and one of the primary facilitators for Envision, a social justice consulting organization. As a professional in higher education Monroe’s passion for anti-oppression and social justice work has translated into developing programs and training and educational initiatives that provide both students and professionals the tools needed to begin the work of understanding self and their responsibilities within the world.

Ka‘ahumanu is a published author, editor, and poet. She and Loraine Hutchins co-edited the ground breaking feminist anthology BI ANY OTHER NAME: Bisexual People Speak Out (Alyson, 1991), which was listed on the Top 100 Queer Books of the 20th Century by Lambda Book Review.

Emi Koyama is a multi-issue social justice slut synthesizing feminist, Asian, survivor, dyke, queer, sex worker, intersex, genderqueer, and crip politics, as these factors, while not a complete descriptor of who she is, all impacted her life. Emi is currently the director of Intersex Initiative.

Saturday evening entertainment includes Deep Dickollective, a queer hip hop group; King Heat, a drag king event created by Fast Friday Production’s Sile P. Singleton; Sarwat Rumi from Mango Tribe! all followed by dancing.

All events will be held on the main UC Davis campus in the Memorial Union and Freeborn Hall. Pre-registration ends February 4, 2005. On-site registration is available pending availability. To learn more about the Conference's past, present, future I invite you to go to our conference's website for updates at: www.comeoutwest.org. Teach For America
Join our movement to ensure that all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. www.teachforamerica.org

Application Deadlines: February 18, 2005

********************************************************************************************************************
In our country, a child s birthplace too often determines his or her educational and life prospects. Educational inequity must be our generation's civil rights issue.

Teach For America is building the movement to address this injustice by calling upon our country's most promising future leaders to commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and to become lifelong advocates for change.

We seek the most outstanding graduating college seniors and recent college graduates - from all majors such as business, medicine, politics, law, education, and social policy - to assume a tremendous leadership role to ensure that their students gain the academic skills needed to succeed in life.

- In the short run, we provide excellent teachers who make an immediate impact in the lives of children growing up in low-income communities by raising their students academic achievement.

- In the long run, our alumni gain the insight, credibility, and network that are critical to effecting meaningful long-term change both inside and outside education.

- As a result of this experience, our alumni are better positioned to succeed in whatever career they ultimately pursue.

This is an enormously difficult endeavor, but we have seen firsthand the tremendous impact our corps members and alumni can have. If you have what it takes - both to excel as a teacher despite immense challenges and to assume great influence in our country - join our movement today.

Seeking all majors. No previous education experience or coursework necessary. Full first-year teacher salary and benefits, financial aid, plus a $9,450 AmeriCorps education award (if eligible). Student loan forbearance and interest payments for two years.

To learn more, visit www.teachforamerica.org <www.teachforamerica.org>, contact admissions@teachforamerica.org <mailto:admissions@teachforamerica.org>, or subscribe to our e-newsletter at: <www.teachforamerica.org/online...e.jsp>. If you would like to meet with Chris Weber, the recruitment director for Teach For America at Davis, please e-mail Abby Frost at abby.frost@teachforamerica.org <mailto:abby.frost@teachforamerica.org> to schedule an appointment.

WHAT IS THE ORGANIZING AND TRAINING DEPARTMENT OF THE TASK FORCE? The Organizing & Training Department (O&T) partners with state and local LGBT political groups to help them do their political work and community organizing with increasingly advanced competence and capability. By working side by side in local communities across the country to educate, train, and mentor, O&T is able to harness the energy of individuals and help direct it down a path that will enable the group to achieve its goals. By making this investment we are able to help develop leaders among ordinary people and train these leaders to create a local organization that will involve increasing numbers of people and be self sustaining and more powerful over time. Our highest priorities include working with communities under attack from religious political extremists. We are both very practical and interested in winning in the short-run -- in taking on even the most difficult community emergencies -- and we are focused on the long-term as well. Thinking strategically and simultaneously about the short-term and long-term is what has allowed us not to only to win specific election victories, but also to achieve a national turnaround in these ballot measure fights.

WHAT IS THE ORGANIZING AND TRAINING FELLOWSHIP This is not your average fellowship. The O&T Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in building grassroots political power. O&T Fellows will work as part of a dynamic field team based in either our New York, Washington DC, or Los Angeles office. The fellows will: - Create and lead training related to organizing action, both in the field and at meetings, conferences, events, and The Task Force annual Creating Change conference. - Collaborate with Task Force staff nationwide - on Task Force priority projects. Current high priority projects include helping communities under attack from Right-wing extremist groups defeat anti-LGBT ballot measures. - Recruit, train, and motivate volunteers to understand and then do action. - Talk face-to-face with voters about issues of importance to the LGBT community - Travel an average of 10 days a month to local communities, helping them build political power

STIPEND Summer Organizing Fellows are paid a stipend of $400 per 40 hour week. The summer 2004 term runs from June – August with a possible November extension. Organizing fellows may be placed in strategic locations where anti-gay measures are being waged against the LGBT community. Summer Organizers are responsible for their own housing and living expenses.

The purpose of the Empowering Women of Color Conference (EWOCC) is to build bridges between academic and community women of color, in an effort to assist them in sharing resources, strategies, and visions that will empower them at all levels of society. The Conference also strives to build networks between different generations, ethnic and racial groups, socioeconomic levels, sexual orientations, and physical abilities. Few forums exist wherein women of color are provided the space to dialogue about the issues that matter most to them. EWOCC provides such a forum. Lesbian Women Needed For Body Image Research
Hi Sheri,

I am a faculty member at Ohio State University in the counseling psychology program. A graduate student and I are working on a research project investigating the body image of lesbian women. The study is online and we were wondering if you would be willing to place the URL of the study in any email newsletter or listServ that the LGBT Resource Center at UC Davis distributes.

Let me tell you a little bit about the study. As of right now, there is a dearth of available literature on the body image experience of lesbian women. It's been hypothesized that belonging to the lesbian subculture may result in special protections against eating disorders and body image disturbances. However, to date, there is little support for this as studies on this topic have been prone to small samples and poor methodology. Our study is seeking to remedy this by investigating a comprehensive model of body image, called objectification theory, on lesbian women.

We are seeking about 300 lesbian women between the ages of 18-24 to complete the study online. It should take about 15-20 minutes to complete and it's completely anonymous. However, if students wish to, they can enter their email address at the end of the study to be entered into a drawing in which two participants will be chosen at random to receive $50. We have received Human Subjects IRB approval from Ohio State. We intend to submit the study for publication in such peer-reviewed journals as "Psychology of Women Quarterly" or "Sex Roles". At the bottom of this email is a short description of the study and a link that you can include in your newsletter or Listserv. Please feel free to email or phone either of us if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

Brief Online Research Study on Body Image
To date, there has been little research done on the body image concerns of lesbian women. You can help to change this by participating in a brief online study that is currently being conducted by researchers in the department of psychology Ohio State University. The study takes about 15 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. Also, participants will be offered the chance to be entered into a drawing for $50. Gay Men’s Health Alert
>HEALTH OFFICIALS ISSUE ALERT ABOUT RARE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE
>
>by Sabin Russell, Chronicle Medical Writer
>SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
>21 Dec 04
>
>San Francisco public health officials issued a warning Monday that a
>rare and potentially debilitating sexually transmitted disease reported
>recently in the Netherlands has turned up among a small number of
>patients in the city.
>
>Known as lymphogranuloma venereum, or LGV, the disease is a form of the
>common sexually transmitted infection chlamydia -- but this particular
>strain can cause scarring of the genitals and colon, and can produce a
>swelling and bursting of lymph glands near the groin.
>
>Although the disease is seldom seen outside of poor, tropical nations,
>doctors in Rotterdam reported 92 cases among gay men during a 17-month
>period ending in September. Isolated cases have also been reported in
>Belgium, France, Sweden and Atlanta, Ga.
>
>In November, doctors at San Francisco's City Clinic treated one man
>with the disease, and subsequent tests of stored specimens spotted
>three other cases that occurred this summer but had gone undetected by
>conventional screens.
>
>None of the four patients who were found to have the bug in San
>Francisco had visited the Netherlands, an indication there may be other
>cases yet to be discovered in the city, said Dr. Sam Mitchell, a
>Department of Public Health epidemiologist.
>
>The four cases in San Francisco were among gay men, some of whom also
>tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Mitchell said
>there is no indication that HIV-positive patients are at higher risk
>for complications of LGV, but there is concern that a patient with the
>chlamydia infection might be more prone to contract HIV because of the
>ulceration caused by the bacteria.
>
>As unpleasant as this form of chlamydia may be, it is easily treatable
>if caught in time. "The idea is to knock it out quickly. If it
>circulates widely, it could be quite challenging,'' Mitchell said.
>
>Treating LGV successfully requires a three-week course of antibiotics,
>instead of the single dose of medicine used to treat common strains of
>chlamydia. Because it is difficult to distinguish early infections of
>LGV from the more benign microbes, Mitchell said the city is
>recommending that doctors treat all cases of rectal chlamydia with the
>three-week regimen.

>"We think doctors should err on the side of caution,'' he said.

>City epidemiologists found the three additional cases by screening
>samples taken from more than 100 patients treated for rectal chlamydia
>in the past year.
